Technical characteristics, equipment and software

The Alienware Gaming m15 R3 lineup offers quite a few different versions of this laptop. First, the manufacturer uses three different matrices. Secondly, you can find m15 R3 with a wide variety of graphics – from GeForce GTX 1650 Ti to GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER in Max-Q design, there is even a laptop version with AMD Radeon GPU. Thirdly, the m15 R3 modifications are equipped with batteries of various capacities. All possible characteristics of an “alien” device are shown in the table below.

Appearance and input devices

The Alienware Gaming m15 R3 appearances nearly unmoved when likened to the preceding group of this model. The owners of such laptops will distinguish R3 from R2, perhaps, only by the lack of a card reader in the older version. A white version of the “alien” came to our test lab – the manufacturer calls this design the phrase Lunar Light. However, there is also a black version of the m15 on sale – Dark Side of the Moon.

The body is made of magnesium alloy, and its coating, called the High Endurance Clear Coat, differs from the shell of its predecessor in its lower soiling, and says the manufacturer himself. I will add that dust and fingerprints on a white background look almost invisible. The device is equipped with RGB lighting.

Alienware R2 M17

Alienware Gaming Greetings, dear reader! More recently, gaming laptops have not been able to compete closely with desktop PCs. Times are changing, and manufacturers are starting to delight us with more powerful stuffing for a lower price. Today I would like to review one of the new products from DELL, namely the Alienware R2 M17.

Configuration and equipment

This Alienware Gaming laptop is available for every pocket and taste. You can buy it from $ 1400 and up to $ 4000. This difference in price is explained by the variation of the Alienware Gaming processor and video card. In the minimum configuration, the Alienware R2 has an Intel ® Core ™ i5-9300H and NVIDIA ®  GeForce GTX ® 1650 , and in the fattest Intel ® Core ™ i9-9980HK , and NVIDIA ® GeForce RTX ™ 2080 Max-Q .

Ergonomics and Design

The first thing I encountered was a beautifully designed box. Alienware lettering in silver with space-style numeral 17. There is enough soft material inside the box, which gives confidence in the safety during transportation. The cord and the power adapter itself neatly hidden, and right under the laptop we see a documentation envelope and a small label.

The Alienware Gaming laptop itself is very different in design from the previous generation. There are 2 color options available, namely Lunar Light and Dark Side of the Moon.

The body is made of high quality magnesium alloy

The inside of the laptop is made of high quality plastic, which is similar to a soft touch to the touch. However, it almost does not get dirty, and if you still manage to get it dirty, all the dirt can be easily wiped off.

The keyboard has also been updated. Increased key travel relative to the old version of the m17 (1.7 mm). The keyboard is one of the nicest I’ve ever used. Support for Anti Ghostling technology with tracking of all clicks separately.

Alienware 15 R4 Gaming Laptop

Recall that under the Alienware trademark, which has been owned by Dell since 2006, exclusively gaming solutions are produced. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the updated Alienware 15 R4 (Revision 4 ) 15.6-inch gaming laptop .

Completion and packaging

The Alienware Gaming 15 R4 laptop comes in a large white cardboard box with a handle that features the Alienware alien head logo. From the inside, this box is upholstered with black foam rubber, in which the laptop itself is packed.

Laptop configuration

There are quite a few different models of the Alienware Gaming 15 R4 laptop available. Various models of processors and video cards, different amounts of RAM can be used. In addition, the storage subsystem and even the screen can be different.

We tested a laptop with the full name Alienware 15 R4 (A15-3278). Its specification is shown in the table.

So, the basis of our modification of the Alienware 15 R4 is a six-core Intel Core i9-8950HK processor(Coffee Lake). It is the most powerful processor for laptops to date. It has a nominal clock speed of 2.9 GHz, which can be increased to 4.8 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. The processor supports Hyper-Threading technology. Its L3 cache size is 12MB and its TDP is 45W. This processor has an integrated Intel HD Graphics 630 graphics core. The Core i9-8950HK processor belongs to the K-series, that is, it has an unlocked multiplier and allows overclocking.

Since we are talking about a Alienware Gaming laptop model, it has a discrete gaming graphics card Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5. Moreover, a video card with Max-Q technology is used, but in this case it did not affect the thickness of the laptop case.

The laptop screen supports Nvidia G-Sync technology, which is incompatible with Nvidia Optimus technology, which is responsible for switching between discrete and processor graphics. Therefore, the processor graphics core Intel HD Graphics 630 cannot be used in this case.

The base frequency of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 (GP104) GPU is 1290 MHz, and in GPU Boost mode it can reach 1468 MHz. As it turned out during testing, under stress mode (FurMark), the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 in steady mode, the GPU frequency is 1430 MHz, and the GDDR5 memory frequency is 1251 MHz.
